By Marcia Lampert, manager, Novant Health Buddy Kemp Cancer Support Center

The term “scanxiety” is defined online as “the tension that builds, particularly among those who have had cancer, as they move toward their regular check-up or scan” or “the feeling of terror and dread that one experiences as they await the results of a scan once faced with the possible return of cancer.” However you define this word, every cancer survivor knows and has experienced scanxiety.

You may ask, “What can I do to help myself when I am experiencing scanxiety?” This preoccupation with an upcoming scan or its results can be unnerving. While it’s hard to make scanxiety go away, there are some tools that cancer survivors can learn to get through this period of time while thinking clearly and sleeping through the night.

Physician with patientUnfortunately, there is not a defined set of tools that will work for everyone who is experiencing scanxiety. The good news is that here at Novant Health Buddy Kemp Cancer Support Center we offer different types of support that may be of help to you and your loved ones.

Sometimes just talking to others who can empathize with your situation is helpful. Whether you prefer individual counseling or a support group (and there are many!), our oncology-certified social workers are available to facilitate conversation and listen to your concerns.

Another great way to re-center is through reflection. Meditation can help you calm your nerves; therapeutic drumming can minimize stress; journaling will get your fears out of your mind and onto paper. All of these mind/body techniques are offered free of charge through Buddy Kemp Cancer Support Center.

Scanxiety is real, but its impact on your well-being doesn’t have to be. Call us to today to see how we can help: 704-384-5223.
