By Alice Brafford, RN, MSN, cancer patient navigator

Does my cancer diagnosis mean that my loved ones are now at higher risk to develop cancer? The answer is… maybe. Many factors are considered when deciding an individual’s risk for cancer: family history, possibility of a genetic mutation and lifestyle choices. Novant Health is fortunate to have a cancer risk clinic to help determine if you are at greater risk to develop cancer based on your personal and family history.

Our clinic team includes a physician, nurse navigator, certified genetic counselor and wellness specialist. The genetic counselor reviews your family history and can determine if genetic testing is appropriate. The cancer risk clinic provides a holistic approach to care and education by discussing recommendations for screening and surveillance, as well as risk-reducing options such as medication, lifestyle modifications and, at times, surgery. Research trials are also reviewed and discussed as appropriate.

Our hope is that patients understand their risk to develop cancer and have an individualized plan of care so that they can live healthy lives and minimize their risk of developing cancer. Recommendations from the clinic team are shared with the patients and their personal physicians.
