Many people have a prescription for long-lasting health and well-being that works better than medications. The recommendations may include the following: Stay physically active, challenge your mind and stay involved with others. Studies show that people who exercise their body and mind with hobbies, classes and other social and intellectual interests live longer. They are also less likely to have symptoms of depression.

Here are some activities to keep you in top form:

  • Ladies playing cardsMaintain your brain. Like a muscle, your brain strengthens when you use it and weakens when you neglect it. Exploring a new subject that has always interested you, such as a foreign language, poetry or writing, can help stimulate your brain. Participating in social activities, such as a game of bridge or poker with friends, will also keep the brain strong. Variety keeps your days interesting and your mind sharp.

  • Get online. Email makes it easy to stay in touch with friends and family. With online bulletin boards and social media, you can connect with others who share your interests. There is a variety of information on hobbies, health and money management, among many other topics that can be found online at the local, national and international level. Use the Internet to expand your activities, not to take the place of face-to-face activities.

  • Keep moving. The Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans recommends 30 minutes of physical activity daily for adults and 60 minutes for children at least five days a week,” said Lesli Munoz, MD, a family practitioner at Novant Health Family Physicians Gastonia. This helps keep your heart healthy and fit, your bones strong, your mood happier, your energy levels up and stress levels down. “A combination of aerobic and anaerobic exercise yields the best results,” said Dr. Munoz. For a change of pace from your normal daily habits, try ballroom dancing, water aerobics or hiking. Make sure to speak with your doctor before you begin any exercise program. For exercise ideas, you can refer to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services brochure, Be Active Your Way: A Guide for Adults or fitness.gov. English and Spanish versions are available.

  • Volunteer. People who volunteer say they make new friends and are rewarded with the experience of helping others. There are a variety of organizations that could use your help. Start with your local hospital, school, community center or place of worship. A good online source is volunteermatch.org.

The best thing about this prescription for good health is that it never expires. Cheers to you for a happy and healthy new year!
