Bookmark and Share An exciting $60 million campaign that’s tailored to your healthcare needs
By Kathy Brown, manager, Novant Health Foundation Presbyterian Medical Center

Our very own Novant Health Foundation Presbyterian Medical Center recently announced plans for a capital campaign that will raise $60 million to build a heart and vascular and cancer care plaza, a combined outpatient facility dedicated to meeting the unique needs of these two patient populations.

For a cancer survivor or heart patient, this new facility will be unlike any other in the region. Housing all physician and outpatient services in one building will enhance care by streamlining communication, facilitating collaboration and making it easy to access the resources a patient will need for his or her journey. In fact, research has shown improved outcomes when patients receive care at a single multidisciplinary center.

The new outpatient center will be located at the corner of Fifth Street and Hawthorne Lane and connected to Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center via a sky bridge to make it easy to get to the hospital if needed.

Additional services patients can expect to see include:

  • Physician and patientCardiac prevention and screening
  • Mutidisciplinary cancer clinics, where patients can have their case reviewed by a team of experts
  • A cancer urgent care, which will minimize possible exposure to harmful germs found in regular ERs and urgent cares
  • Cancer clinics for radiation oncology, medical oncology, surgical oncology and gynecologic oncology
  • Heart and vascular clinics for cardiology, cardiovascular surgery, congestive heart failure, atrial fibrillation, peripheral vascular disease and valve disorders
  • Infusion center
  • Dedicated cancer and heart nurse navigators
  • Cardiac and cancer rehabilitation and wellness, offering yoga, massage, nutrition, and physical, occupational and speech therapy services
  • Cardio-oncology, an emerging field of medicine dedicated to minimizing the cardiovascular impact of cancer treatment
  • Research and clinical trials
  • Retail pharmacy
  • Prayer room
  • A separate pediatric specialty complex adjacent to the facility to house oncology, cardiology and additional specialties for our community’s young patients

The need is great for a center like this in our community. Charlotte ranks number one in the nation for growth, yet there isn’t one comprehensive, multidisciplinary center to tackle cancer and heart disease – our country’s number one and number two killers – together. Without this new outpatient facility, we truly will have an access problem in the years to come.

Harry Smith, president, Novant Health greater Charlotte market, underscores the importance of this campaign. “Thanks to clinical advancements, cancer and heart patients are living longer,” he said. “With a shift from traditional inpatient medicine to multidisciplinary outpatient treatment, it’s our responsibility as healthcare providers to make sure that every touch point along the journey is easy for our patients to access. That’s what this outpatient facility is all about: creating connections and improving the healthcare experience.”

We’re really excited about what this new opportunity means for those facing cancer or heart disease, and we truly believe it will transform the healthcare experience. With the support of our community, we can become a destination for medical miracles.
